Product Designer: Mechanical engineer

Job Overview:

We are looking for a highly creative and technically skilled Product Designer with a strong background in designing educational kits for the EdTech industry, particularly those involving robotics kits built using metallic and mechanical components. The ideal candidate should be passionate about hands-on STEM learning and capable of translating complex concepts into intuitive, durable, and learner-friendly product designs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design and develop metallic and mechanical part-based educational robotics kits for school and hobbyist use.
  • Collaborate with curriculum, electronics, and content teams to create kits that align with learning goals.
  • Create 2D drawings, 3D CAD models, and exploded views for manufacturing and assembly.
  • Prototype, test, and iterate on mechanical designs for usability, safety, and cost-efficiency.
  • Select appropriate materials (e.g., aluminum, steel, alloys) suitable for classroom or DIY use.
  • Ensure designs are modular, reusable, and easy to assemble by students and educators.
  • Work with suppliers/vendors for part sourcing, cost estimation, and production timelines.
  • Maintain comprehensive documentation including BOM, assembly manuals, and technical specifications.
Required Skills and Qualifications:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Product Design, Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Design, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in designing educational or robotics kits, preferably with metallic components.
  • Proficient in CAD software such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, or AutoCAD.
  • Strong understanding of mechanical design principles, tolerances, and manufacturability (sheet metal, laser cutting, CNC, etc.).
  • Ability to convert design concepts into mass-producible kits.
  • Experience in developing user-friendly, safe, and robust designs for K–12 or STEM programs.
  • Good understanding of ergonomics and safety standards in educational environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in the EdTech or robotics education sector.
  • Familiarity with rapid prototyping techniques (3D printing, laser cutting, etc.).
  • Experience working with electronics and integrating mechanical parts with sensors/motors/controllers.
  • Hands-on experience in testing kits in school or lab environments.
  • Knowledge of design-for-cost and design-for-assembly principles.
